It costs about $120 a day, nearly $45,000 a year to incarcerate someone, yet nearly half return to prison after release.

Diversion programs aim to break that cycle by addressing root causes like mental health and addiction. In Las Vegas, the LIMA program— a partnership between Metro Police and the courts focuses on support over punishment.

The program is free and voluntary, offering housing, treatment, and job training. Fewer than 10 percent of participants reoffend.

A new group will graduate next week, marking another step forward for those choosing to rebuild their lives.
