Tuesday Sessions

Each course description will be accompanied by one or more two-letter codes to represent the core competencies addressed by the session. The core competencies, as identified by the Judicial Education Requirements Study Committee, and implemented by the Nevada District Judges Association, are:

Judicial Office (JO)
Judicial Skills (JS)
Judicial Knowledge (JK)
Judicial Administration (JA)

Following the recommendations of the Judicial Education Requirements Study Committee, to provide a framework for curriculum-based educational planning, the AOC will identify the core competencies addressed by each course offered at a seminar. Eight of the annually required 13 continuing education credits are intended to be drawn from core competency-linked sessions, in accordance with the committee’s recommendations. The Judicial Education Unit of the AOC will be developing methods to track judges’ credits in core competency areas. Details will be developed with the NDJA Education Committee and promulgated when available.

8:45 AM - 10:15 AM	WORKING WITH FAMILIES IN CONFLICT; A PRACTICAL APPROACH (1.5 hours CLE) {JK} Alicia Davis, JD, National Center for State Courts Judge Bruce R. Cohen, Maricopa County Superior Court This session is designed to address the complexities inherent in family law cases, a challenge faced increasingly by judges nationwide. Through a discussion led by former Family Presiding Judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court the Hon. Bruce R. Cohen and Principal Court Management Consultant Alicia Davis, this session will consider the increase in case complexity, the challenges that these cases present, and strategies for managing complex cases through tailored court orders, in-court work with parties, data analytics, and case assignment. We will explore the trap of binary choices, the need to consider safety first, last, and always, and how we might better frame our decision-making matrix. 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM	FENTANYL AND THE COURTS (1.0 hour CLE) {JK} Dr. Merritt Dunlap, University of Nevada at Reno Our speaker will discuss what fentanyl is, how it got to be the major drug of abuse, the pharmacology of its use and abuse, the impact on society, how it’s made, smuggled, and marketed, how overdoses are happening, how overdose is treated and possible actions to address the epidemic. PowerPoint Presentation	Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the pharmacology of fentanyl and its physiological effects. Participants will develop actionable strategies and initiatives to mitigate the impact of fentanyl abuse on individuals, families, and communities.

2:15 PM- 3:15 PM	CURRENT STATUS AND UNANSWERED QUESTIONS IN NEVADA FAMILY LAW JURISDICTION (1.0 hour CLE) {JO/JA} Mr. Marshal Willick, Willick Law Group Family law is simply different. There are special jurisdictional rules for divorce, custody, support, and other categories, which can and do lead to different results in a single case, some of which results are certain, and some of which are not. From uniform acts to amendment of underlying Nevada statutes, there are multiple points of Nevada Family Law Jurisdiction that we will explore. 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM	IMPACT OF NEVADA APPELLATE DECISIONS ON FAMILY COURTS (1.5 hours CLE) {JS} Judge Charles Hoskin, Eighth Judicial District Court Judge Dixie Grossman, Second Judicial District Court The panel will engage participants in discussion regarding cases from the Nevada Supreme Court and Court of Appeals addressing the impact on district judges serving in our family courts and best practices going forward. Presentation Handout	Participants will determine the consequences of recent state appellate court decisions on family courts.
