This seminar explores the current landscape of conditions that can be imposed at sentencing, with a focus on the alignment between judicial options and evidence-based outcomes. After a brief review of sentencing conditions that can be imposed in Nevada’s justice and municipal courts, we will explore data, research, and promising initiatives from other jurisdictions. Seminar participants will have the opportunity to discuss their decision-making strategies, given jurisdictional differences in access to resources and imperfect data.

Learning Objectives:
Seminar attendees will gain familiarity with:

1. Current research and promising initiatives regarding the imposition of monetary sanctions and their alternative: community service.

2. Some common legal and practical issues related to conditions that impose geographical and other restrictions.

3. Best practices and promising initiatives to improve success in complying with sentencing conditions and reducing recidivism.

4. The state of the research and “research gaps” regarding the effectiveness of treatment-based sentencing conditions.
