Nevada judges and drug court professionals coping with opioid addiction can access new training tips and tools at a new National Center for State Courts (NCSC) website located at http://www.ncsc.org/opioidsandcourts.

The NCSC Opioids and the Courts web page offers courts materials and information about how best to respond to the opioid epidemic. Currently the page provides statistics, a news roundup, and listings of available resources including child welfare, treatment interventions, and recommendations from national organizations. Other information, such as toolkits and bench cards are being developed and will be located on this site.

In 2015, opioid overdoses were the leading cause of drug-related deaths in Nevada. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified 619 Nevadans who died of a drug overdose in 2015. A total of 68% of those deaths were from opioids.

A new state law took effect in January 2018 aimed at cutting Nevada’s addiction to opioids by limiting opioid prescriptions.
