Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval appointed Justice Silver as one of three judges to the Inaugural Court of Appeals of Nevada in December of 2014 and she was elected to the seat in November of 2016. In January of 2017, Governor Sandoval swore her in as the first female Chief Judge of the Nevada Court of Appeals. Also in January of 2017, the Nevada Supreme Court appointed Judge Silver to the Nevada Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics. Finally, in January of 2022, Justice Silver became the Chief Presiding Justice for the Northern Nevada Panel of the Supreme Court of Nevada.
Justice Silver has been practicing law for more than 33 years and has served as a judge for over 19 years. She is the only judge in the history of Nevada to be elected to every court in Nevada’s court system. Justice Silver has been elected to the bench six times by the citizens of Nevada.
Justice Silver grew up in Boulder City, Nevada and graduated from Ed. W. Clark High School in Las Vegas. In 1986, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In 1989, she earned her Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, California.
After passing both Nevada and California bars, and working as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Earle White, Jr., an Eighth Judicial District Court judge, she joined the Clark County District Attorney’s Office and was ultimately assigned as the Chief Deputy District Attorney of the Special Victims Unit. During her almost 14 years at the DA’s office, she tried more than one hundred jury trials-specializing in capital murder cases, sexual assault cases, child abuse cases, and domestic violence and stalking cases.
Famously, Justice Silver prosecuted and secured convictions against John Wayne Bobbitt and Floyd Mayweather, Jr., for domestic violence and stalking. She also prosecuted and obtained convictions against the stalkers of Nevada Senator Harry Reid, Nevada Senator John Ensign, the late entertainer Jerry Lewis, former-Las Vegas Sheriff Jerry Keller, and casino moguls Elaine and Steve Wynn.
Justice Silver was elected to the Las Vegas Municipal Court in 2003, the Las Vegas Justice Court in 2006, and elected to the Eighth Judicial District Court in 2008, and again in 2014. In 2011, as a District Court Judge, Justice Silver presided over one of the highest-profile trials in Nevada–a products liability case which resulted in one of the highest verdicts in the history of Nevada.
