Judge Abbi Silver

 Judge Abbi Silver 2017

Judge Abbi Silver was appointed to the Court of Appeals, Department 3, by Governor Brian Sandoval in December 2014. In January of 2017, Governor Sandoval swore Judge Silver in as the first female Chief Judge of the Nevada Court of Appeals.

Judge Silver grew up in Boulder City and graduated from Clark High School in Las Vegas. In 1986, Judge Silver earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In 1989, she earned her Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, California. After passing both Nevada and California bars, and working as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Earle White, Jr., Eighth Judicial District Court judge, she joined the Clark County District Attorney’s Office and was ultimately assigned as the Chief Deputy DA of the Special Victims Unit. During her almost 14 years at the DA’s office, she tried more than one hundred jury trials.

Judge Silver prosecuted and secured convictions against John Wayne Bobbitt and Floyd Mayweather, Jr., for domestic violence and stalking. In 1998, Judge Silver was named Chief Deputy District Attorney in the newly created Domestic Violence and Aggravated Stalking Division of the Special Victim’s Unit. She prosecuted and obtained convictions against the stalkers of Senator Harry Reid, Senator John Ensign, entertainer Jerry Lewis, former-sheriff Jerry Keller, and casino mogul Steve Wynn.

In 2017, the Nevada Supreme Court appointed Judge Silver to the Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics. The Standing Committee provides opinions to judges on judicial ethics and assists the Nevada Supreme Court by studying and recommending additions, amendments, or repeals of the Revised Nevada Code of Judicial Conduct or other laws governing the conduct of judges and judicial candidates.

Judge Silver was elected to the Las Vegas Municipal Court in 2003, the Las Vegas Justice Court in 2006, and to the Eighth Judicial District Court in 2009, and again in 2014. In 2011, Judge Silver presided over one of the highest-profile product liability trials in Nevada – the case against the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada — which resulted in one of the highest verdicts in the history of Nevada. Judge Silver has been practicing law for over 28 years, has served as a judge for over 14 years, and has served at every level of the court system.
