The Orientation Workshop/Written Examination for Prospective Court Interpreters (Workshop) was held in Las Vegas on July 21 and 22, 2017. There were 15 prospective candidates that attended the Workshop.
Prospective interpreters listen to an overview of the Nevada Judiciary.
The Workshop provides information regarding the Nevada judiciary, an introduction to Nevada’s court system, the fundamentals of court interpretation, legal terminology, interpreter ethics, and professional conduct.
Nevada has a shortage of certified court interpreters and the Workshop is the first step towards becoming certified to work in court. Certified court interpreters assist courts with meaningful access for limited English proficiency (LEP) speakers that cannot fully and equally participate in their court event without assistance. Quality and accuracy of the language services are critical to avoid serious consequences to the LEP person.
